Lapillo, a lava stone. Light, black, decorative, deadly. Lapilli, plural of the Latin lapillus meaning small stone are a type of ejecta, fragments of lava ejected by volcanoes. Lapilli range in size from 2 to 30 millimetres or from 2 to 64 millimetres, depending on the classification. Stacked lapilli form loose layers known as pozzolana, used by Romans to make their concrete. The rock formed by the compaction of lapilli is called tuff. Lavic stone is an essential component of the Vesuvian geological and visual landscape. The ordinary soil found in Vesvian cities is frequently composed of small lava stones. Lapilli are widely used for decorative purposes, in gardens as in interiors.
